We teach the art of cycling.

Art of Cycling is a coaching business dedicated to growing the skills and confidence of cyclists through personalized training programs and skills-instruction services designed to turn cycling into an art form. AOC coaches create a supportive learning environment where riders can develop their skills and abilities. Our ideal client has made a commitment to the sport of cycling and has a sincere desire to improve. They can be dedicated racers or time-crunched professionals. We work with road and mountain bikers from novice to advanced.

As personal coaches, we create purpose-built training plans that include structured workouts to maximize results. We use established techniques based on strategic implementation of specific training phases (periodization) to build strength and endurance to meet athletes’ goals. We also focus on mental training to build confidence and reduce unnecessary fatigue from worry, anxiety, and fear. We believe strongly in the value of personalized training programs, and consider every aspect of the athlete in our approach.

As skills instructors, we meet athletes where they are and help them understand the mechanics of cycling. We focus on bike-body integration when it comes to balance, posture, and technique. Our trained eyes can quickly identify areas of improvement, offering rapid results during private skills sessions. We are also available for group instruction.

Our main purpose is always to help athletes more deeply enjoy the sport of cycling. We do this by helping to cultivate an athletic mindset that is present, positive, and focused on process (similar to that of an artist). Our methods empower and support athletes who commit the time and energy to their own personal training and development. Our backgrounds in fine art, health, and wellness bring depth and meaning to our coaching methodology.

We listen to our athletes and help them define meaningful and measurable goals. Whatever they want to do, we help them achieve it.

Coach Kristen

Kristen Phillips started riding in 1999 and began coaching in 2004 as mountain bike instructor for Northern Arizona University. This experience taught her she loves giving back to the sport she loves by helping others succeed. She raced for many years, working her way through the ranks from total beginner to racing regionally and nationally as a Pro cross-country mountain bike and Category 2 road cyclist. Kristen has been a USA Cycling Certified Coach and Registered Yoga Teacher since 2009. She has been a student of training metrics and methodology (including power) for over a decade. Her experience includes: running a race team in Arizona, working as head bike coach for a triathlon training program in Hawaii, and co-founding a successful women’s cycling program in NYC. She is now involved in events, education, and outreach for an outdoor industry leader, and continues to express herself through a personal art practice.

Coach Lisa

Lisa Mazzola started riding in 2005 and began coaching in 2011 as a leader for the New York Cycle Club A-Classic SIG training program (the highest level group coaching program in NYC). She has been a CRCA Women's Development Coach for the past two years, helping mentor developing women racers in Central Park and beyond. Lisa has also been a ride leader for a large women's cycling program in New York City. She is a current Category 3 road racer, earning multiple top-5 and podium placings in races including Tour of the Battenkill and Bear Mountain Classic. Notable accomplishments include finishing L'Etape du Tour in 2015 and the Mount Washington Hill Climb in 2017. Lisa received her yoga teaching certification in 2002. Lisa’s coaching is inspired by her role as a an art educator at The Museum of Modern Art, where she helps learners of all ages make connections to the art and ideas in MoMA’s collection.
